His Dark Materials

For my next theatre visit. I will be keeping it in the family..

"Scottish Youth Theatre brings to the stage the Scottish Premier of
His Dark Materials, the adaptation of the hugely successful trilogy of novels Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. The production takes us on a thrilling adventure to worlds familiar and unknown."

My little sister will be playing Lyra Belacqua, which is as good a reason as any to be seeing it and having had a sneak peek at some of the rehearsals, including an exciting bear fight, I am really looking forward to this production.

I feel that this is a great production for Scottish Youth Theatre to be doing. A truly challenging story, but one which very much resonates with topics relevant to young people: rebellion against authority, anti-establishment, and seeking approval from peers and parents.

"Lyra and Will, its two central characters encounter fantastical creatures in parallel worlds - rebellious angels, soul-eating specters, child-catching Gobblers and the armoured bears and witch-clans of the Arctic. Finally, before reaching, perhaps, the republic of heaven, they must visit the land of the dead."

Better to see it now and in the flesh, before my mind is transformed by the film version which is being released later this year.
